Abstract

The Vimba vimba stock was estimated by means of three methods: fishing success, virtual population, and recapture of tagged fish. Estimates of the rate of exploitation in 1952 through 1963 varied between 31.7 and 62.6 per cent. The average total exploited population in the period 1952-1963 was between c. 728 and 871 thousand fish or between c. 390 and 486 ton. Somewhere between 4.5 and 13 per cent of that amount reached spawning grounds every year.
